Sophia took a deep breath and re-set the heavy bag. She slumped forward and leant against it, her exhausted body resting against the beaten leather. She closed her eyes and slowed her breathing.
Sean: You'll wear yourself out...
Sophia looked around, there was no one to be seen. The voice was inside her head, recalling a conversation she'd had less than a week ago, in this very room.
In her mind she could almost see Sean walking towards her, placing a hand on her shoulder.
Sean: You'll wear yourself out...
Sophia: You'd know all about being worn out.
Sean: That's a little cruel lass...
Sophia sighed
Sophia: Are you here to spar?
Sean: I'm here to ask you one more time, come with me. No one should be alone during the holidays.
Sophia: I... I have work to do.
Sophia re-set the bag and took her stance
Sean: No, you don't...
Sophia: Last week I defeated the heathens, before that I destroyed John Champa... I can't rest now...
Sean: You'll defeat no one being burned out...
Sophia: I have a match on New Years Day. I can't take time out now.
Sean: The gym will still be here, and I've heard rumours that they have great gyms over in London.
Sophia: I'm not going to London.
Sean sighed
Sean: Are you ever going to forgive him?
Sophia: I already have... but I have...
Sean: Work to do... you mentioned. You're not a machine lass, you're a human being. Your body may be getting tougher every day, but it's hardening your soul too.
Sophia: You need a hard head and a strong heart to get things done around here...
Sean: What of friends?
Sophia threw a punch
Sophia: I have all the friends I need...
Sean: Name them...
Sophia: I said I have all the friends I need.
Sean shook his head
Sean: Sounds lonely.
Sophia: Sounds reliable...
Sean turned to leave, making his way towards the door.
Sean: Come with me lass. Do you really want to miss seeing your uncle try and cook a turkey?
Sophia didn't answer, and continued to throw punches and kicks.
Sean: What about Melissa? She's going to be disappointed.
Sophia stopped, and sighed. She leant against the bad.
Sophia: She'll get over it...
Sean bowed his head
Sean: Sophia, no one wants to see you succeed more than me, except maybe your uncle. But whatever you may hear those wrestlers say on TV, some prices are too high to pay.
Sophia reset her position.
Sophia: I have work to do.
With that, Sean turned and headed for the door. The mental image Sophia held in her mind dissipated as he reached it. She looked around, and there was no one there.
She was alone.
Just the way she liked it.
