A few days had passed, and the place was finally beginning to look like a wrestling arena. It had cost more than a few dollars and more than a few night’s sleep, but Jon Kellar felt a real sense of accomplishment as he looked down from the balcony.
The dust had been cleared from the ring, and the ring itself now occupied the centre of the hall, allowing for the maximum attendance capacity. A conservative estimate by the engineer was that the arena could hold approximately 400 seats all told, but the Icons had agreed over a few beers that it would make for a greater atmosphere if the arena only had 150 seats, to make room for more standing room. All told, the arena could expect to hold a crowd of around 500-600 people. It may have been pitiful compared to the GZW2K1 Coliseum, but it was a start.
Behind him, on the second level, what used to be Tonya’s old office had been cleaned and the furniture replaced, to create a booker’s lounge and conference room. Why Davis had insisted on black leather furniture was anyone’s guess, but Kellar had to acknowledge that Davis had more experience of the booking side of the business than he did. If black leather made the old man happy, Kellar wasn’t going to fight him over it.
Engineer: Mr Kellar!!!
Kellar looked down to see a large man in dirty overalls and a hard hat looking back at him.
Kellar: Yes, what is it James?
Engineer: You sure you don’t want the seats bolted to the floor?
Kellar: I’m sure… when this isn’t an arena we’ll need the space for drill work. This is still going to be a school, not just an arena. Folding seats, non fixed, just like I said.
Engineer: Hey, it’s your dime buddy.
Suddenly, the usual hustle and bustle of the construction site was interrupted by something much louder, an engine. Everyone froze in shock as a figure in black leather rode through the double doors on a motorcycle. Large burly men scattered everywhere as the figure glided around the ring and screeched to a halt. Kellar didn’t move, well, aside from his eyes which he rolled.
Kellar: Hello Sophia…
Sophia Wilson removed her helmet and shook her long blonde hair. She smiled as the men grumbled and emerged from their hiding places.
Sophia: So many men… so few b…
Kellar: Sophia… upstairs… now…
Sophia stuck her tongue out and dismounted her bike. She slipped her helmet over the handlebars and made her way up the stairs to the second level, where her uncle was already holding open the door to the booker’s lounge. She entered.
Kellar: Pull another stunt like that and you may never see it again.
Sophia: Oh come on… you and Sean got a way with much much worse in UCW
Kellar: That was a long time ago…
Sophia: I got your tweet, though I gotta admit part of me thought you were joking.
Kellar: How much of you?
Sophia raised her eyebrow
Sophia: Do you really want me to answer that?
Kellar: I guess not. Have a seat.
Sophia dropped onto the couch as Kellar made his way to the armchair.
Sophia: Wow… who the hell picked the decor.
Kellar: Davis.
Sophia: Huh… never thought he was the type. I mean, I quite like leather as much as the next girl but…
Kellar: Sophia… there are some things an uncle doesn’t need to know. Has your time in Chicago completely destroyed your internal filter?
Sophia smiled.
Kellar: So, are you in?
Sophia: I’m in, Sasha isn’t.
Kellar sighed
Kellar: Damn. I was hoping to have both Macheda girls…
Sophia: Do you have any idea how busy Sasha is nowadays? Her own mother is booking appointments months in advance, you’re lucky I was even able to get her on the phone.
Kellar: But you’re free?
Sophia: Not really, but I figure I owe you and Davis one… after all, you gave me my start. Plus, I’d have to be a real bitch to turn down an event for a Children’s Hospital.
Kellar: I’ll get the paperwork.
Kellar rose and made his way over to the filing cabinet in the corner. He pulled hard on the handle, but it wouldn’t shift.
Sophia: Who’s my opponent?
Kellar: Well everything’s in flux at the moment, but the smart money’s on one of Nate William’s students…
Sophia: Does he or she have a name?
Kellar delivered a stiff middle kick to the cabinet, forcing it to release the drawer.
Kellar: Like I say… it’s all in flux. None of us were expecting to do a show this soon…
Sophia smiled
Sophia: Something tells me you’ll pull it off…
Kellar pulled the contract out of the drawer and kicked the cabinet again. He handed it over to his neice.
Kellar: Thanks for the confidence.
Sophia: Anytime… Sensei.
She winked and signed the paperwork, handing it back to her uncle. Kellar took it, gratefully.
Kellar: Great! That’s one…
Sophia: I thought it was two… Sean Locke…
Kellar frowned
Sophia: You didn’t know?
Kellar: He mentioned something on Twitter… I thought he was just being a dick.
Sophia: Well… maybe he is. I know there was a lot of talk about him going to Broadwalk or EWC, then someone told me he was doing a small show in Atlanta. I just put two and two together.
Kellar sighed
Kellar: Why would Davis not tell me?
Sophia: Look, for all I know it’s just a rumour. I just came here to sign a contract…
Kellar: He knows how I feel about Sean... he's everything wrong with this sport.
Sophia: He is a Grand Slam winner...
Kellar glared at her.
Sophia: Okay... not helping
Kellar checked his watch
Kellar: I still have 10 hours before I fly to Japan, I need to find Davis before then...
Sophia: Oh come on... don't be like that...
Kellar: Like what?
Sophia: All angry, and bitchy and "alpha-male"...ey. It's John Pariah all over again.
Kellar: I'm just going to talk to him...
Sophia: That's how it starts...
Kellar: Look, can you at least credit me with an ounce of self control? I just want to have a conversation with Davis...
Sophia sighed and shrugged.
Sophia: Okay.
Kellar nodded and hugged his niece, giving her a kiss on the cheek as he did.
Kellar: We'll have dinner when I'm back from Japan. Have a proper catch up...
Sophia: Just promise me you won't... well... go Human Dynamite on Davis. He's just doing what he thinks is best for business
Kellar: I promise.
Kellar left the room.
Immediately, Sophia reached into her jacket and pulled out her phone. She tapped the screen a few times, then held it up to her ear.
Sophia: Mr Davis... it's Sophia. You may want to take an aspirin...
