It hadn't taken him long to get back to the hotel. With his mind doing overtime, along with the length of his legs, his pace had gotten him back in half the time it took him to get there in the first place. He didn’t even acknowledge the reception staff on his way past towards the stairs and the lift wasn’t an option when it meant he'd have to stand still and let his thoughts catch up with him. Four steps at a time got him to the third floor quickly before he stormed the hallway to his room and let his keycard touch the reader on the handle before he let himself in. Inside, Leon was on the bed, taking full advantage of the hotel wifi that was now working and had the laptop infront of him. With the sound of the door closing, Leon's head turns as he presses on the touch pad.
Leon: Trys?
Trystan: Hey…
He smiled over at the man who was now moving the laptop from his thighs so he could rise from the bed. Leon eyed him but he was none the wiser no matter what he was looking out for. At the same time he didn’t really just want to come right out with a question no one should ever have to ask so he settled for something a little more subtle.
Leon: How did it go?
Trystan: As well as expected...?
He musters the most artificial smile to send to the man beginning to head his way but Leon doesn’t buy it.
Leon: Not great? I take it she was pissed off that you wasted her time and has decided to punish you for it which means things stay the same as they were...
Trystan: Heh…
Leon: What?
Trystan: Nothing…
Leon stares at the man as he tosses the manila envelope onto the table near the door and removes his sunglasses that he closes carefully and sets down next to the envelope. A hand out to him goes unnoticed or ignored as he heads straight for the window at the other side of the room. Leon drops his hand to his side, looking at it for a moment and then at the man staring out of the window with the side of his head against the frame.
Leon: Uh...do you want a drink?
Trystan: Nothing we have in this room, so no…
Leon: Well...okay.
He came over awkward, should he go over? Should he stay where he was? He gazes over at the envelope briefly.
Leon: Is there anything I can do?
Trystan's head hardly turns at all as he looks back at the man and then out the window again.
Trystan: Leon's it's okay. You can stop.
Leon: Stop what?
Trystan: Nothing. Look, I think I'm going to go for a quick drink. This trip has been nothing but stress.
Leon: You can't...
Trystan: Excuse me?
He moves away from the window and heads back towards the door until Leon grabs his wrist.
Leon: Trys? What's going on? What did she do?
Trystan: What did she do? Here…
He swipes the envelope from the table and hands it to Leon. He just holds it, staring at the man. This was strange behaviour for Trystan but he shook it off as he unfastened the envelope and slides the papers out; it doesn’t take long for his brows to rise at what he's reading.
Trystan: She's not even my child, Leon…
Leon: Fucking hell, Trys...I'm so sorry...
Trystan: Yeah well...I suppose it shouldn’t come as a shock considering her reputation at the time. And it makes sense why she didn’t want me to see the child. Also makes sense why she disappeared so out of the blue when she realised she was pregnant.
Leon: I don’t know what to say. As much as this was always a possibility I didn’t think it would turn out this way.
Trystan: I just don’t know what I did to deserve this, you know? I've never tried to hurt anyone. I've always been loyal, faithful, loving and caring and this is what I get. Lied to, cheated on, pushed aside and mistreated by an aggressive, abrasive and unreasonable bitch and I have no idea why you're looking at me like that when you are just like her!
Leon: Sorry?
That was unexpected. Leon slides the papers back into the envelope but doesn’t take his eyes off the man who seemed to be getting agitated.
Trystan: Don’t play coy, Leon. You're exactly the same. I must have a type or something because it's always the same thing. The nicer I am, the nastier people get, the more they try to hurt me.
Leon arches a brow, calmly putting the envelope back down on the table. Maybe he should have just let him go for that drink or maybe he should let him take his wife in the first place. It was guaranteed that she wouldn’t be listening to this right now. He turns around, Trystan's face looking positively tense and annoyed, the man pursing his lips as he bore a hole into Leon.
Trystan: Nothing? It's true, isn't it? I should be grateful you're not actually a woman because god knows what you'd be doing to me then. I bet even Joy could learn a thing or two from you, eh, Leon? They lie. Hell, I wouldn’t have even ended up with her if you'd been truthful!
Leon: In case you missed it, I was already married by the time you decided to get with her.
Trystan: And before that?! You've lied about how you've felt since we met. Which means you've always fucking lied to me! Like I said, that's what people do because fuck how Trystan might feel, right?!
Leon begins to look equally as tense and wasn’t quite appreciating what he was hearing. Feeling his blood pressure rising, he takes a deep breath and stands face to face with Trystan.
Leon: Okay? Look, I know you're upset and quite possibly even in shock but that's no reason to take it out on me.
Trystan: That's it, brush it aside…
Leon: Brush what aside? I haven't actually done anything here?
Trystan: No, you never do, Leon.
Leon: Right, okay. Yes, I'm a shit person and I've done some terrible things I spend every day lamenting over, regretting and even crying over but right here, now, today I've done nothing wrong. And you know what, I'm not even going to rise to this. All I've done was come here with you so I could support you no matter what happened.
Trystan just glared, almost as if it wasn't Leon he was looking at.
Trystan: I'm going for that drink!
Leon: I told you that you can't.
Trystan: And you're going to stop me, Leon?
Leon: I don’t want to have to but I will if it comes to that. If you go, I'd have to be there and I can't be in a place where I would be surrounding myself with temptation Please, don’t make me have to fight with myself. Don’t punish me for something she's done. I know you don’t deserve it. Fuck, you really didn’t deserve what I did either but I am not her and please don’t tear me to shreds because you didn’t want to do it to her. Not while I'm here just wanting to love you. You wouldn’t be like this with Evalyn...
He'd gone from looking irate to pleading, his eyes trying to search the blank expression of Trystan when the bigger man suddenly crouches and bursts into tears with his hands over his mouth. His sobs were so heartbreaking that even Leon had to fight to stop himself joining him as he hovered over him.
Leon: Shit...Trys?
He wasn't going to get an answer, the man was too far gone, just letting it all out. Leon began to look upset at the sight before him, crouching in front of him and at eye level he just put his arms around the bigger man, pulling him close. Seconds later he felt Trystan's arms around him as he cried hard into Leon's neck.
Leon: Trys...
Trystan: I'm sorry. I…
Leon: It's okay. I know...
Trystan: What did I do wrong?!
Leon: You did nothing wrong, sweetheart.
Trystan: I must have! Otherwise this wouldn’t be happening right now! Leon, she even gave that child my sister's name, that sick fucking woman!
Leon: And she will have to be the one to explain it to that little girl when she gets older. But you are not to blame for anything, not to feel guilty for and what she's done is deplorable.
Trystan: Deplorable?! Three people have gotten hurt, Leon! Me, that child and whoever the father is because he's missed out too!
Leon: There you go being all selfless and thinking of other people. Let them deal with that. Right now, you're the one that matters. No one else, alright.
He can feel a nod against his neck that had gotten damp. Leon shakes his head, blinking hard as he looked at the ceiling and stroked the back of Trystan's head as his crying didn’t seem to be slowing down. And what a strange thing to witness when Trystan had always done a good job of hiding that side from the man he considered a husband. The moment the man slowed down, Leon got a hand to Trystan's face, moving him back a bit to wipe the tears from his eyes. Seeing the sight made Leon's heart sink and almost brought him to tears but he takes a breath and offers him a warm smile and stroke of the cheek.
Leon: It's going to be alright in the end, you'll see. Sure it hurts like hell today but you won't always feel that way.
Trystan: But I wanted that child...I never planned for her but the moment I saw her…
Leon: I know, love...
Trystan: No you don’t, Leon. When we sat being made a fuss over on Father's day, I zoned out for a while, wondering how it would be if my own child did that for me, if she could love me as much as your children do. And now it can never happen. That kills me!
Leon: But they are as much your children as they are mine...
Trystan: No…
Leon: Tell that to Daniel...I'm not his father. Tell that to Lucy because Evalyn isn't her biological mother. Parenthood has nothing to do with biology. Well...it does but you know what I mean. Just because someone has made a child, doesn’t make them a parent.
Trystan breathes out an audible and distressed sigh, clinging onto Leon again.
Leon: You are well loved and it doesn’t matter who does it. You matter...
Trystan: But…
Leon: We all love you, Trys. Those children, absolutely. They've dropped the uncle thing and just call you Trys because you're like a father to them. Do you see?
Trystan: But, Leon...I spent four years pining for a child that wasn’t even mine, I was allowed to bond with her as a baby. That's cruel!
Leon: I know it is. But what if she didn’t think it could be anyone else's?
Trystan: I know she didn’t. She didn’t believe the results and even threatened the woman to redo them before she eventually stormed out.
Leon: That says a lot.
Trystan: So does her saying it wasn’t over.
Leon: What's not over?
Trystan: I don’t know. There's no match but she wants to challenge the result. She's not going to make this easy.
Leon: Then let her try. She has no hold over you and you owe her nothing. I'll be there.
That was it, Trystan started crying again, Leon just holding him tight. He really wasn’t used to being on that side of the fence at all when it was usually him crying but he did well to hold himself together anyway.
Leon: Hey...
Trystan: I'm sorry! I shouldn’t have said those things to you…
Leon: It's not nice but I deserve it. I know that so don’t worry about it. Just don’t make a habit of it, love. Now how about that coffee? And...I found that awesome ice cream. The chocolate one with the swirl of sauce running through it. So...how about you go and have a shower, wash off today and come and cuddle with me. We can watch a movie with choccy ice cream. Just you and me. Might as well make the most of it because we'll be flying back in the morning.
Trystan: I can't wait to go back home…
Leon: Me neither so off you go. Get sorted and I'll get stuff ready over there, okay?
Trystan moves his head back again, gazing at Leon with a nod. Leon smiles a little then plants a kiss on his forehead before taking his hands and rises, bringing Trystan with him. Trystan clutches Leon again, not wanting to let him go. Leon lets him hold on for as long as he needed before cradling his face in both hands.
Leon: It's going to be okay, I promise...
Trystan: I want to believe you…
Leon: And in time, you will...
His lips curl a little at the edges before he kisses the man briefly on the lips before Trystan removes his jacket, hangs it up and disappears into the bathroom. The moment the door locked, Leon's head falls back, eyes closed. He opens them moments later, head forward again.
Leon: She better make sure I never see her again…
He wipes his eyes before he moves for the bed to fetch his phone to send a text.
