Sitting behind his large mahogany desk within in his home office talking on the phone is one third of the Icon's Circle, Ring of Honor Icon Nathaniel Davis.
"Come on, Dark, it's a fundraiser show for a children's hospital. A children's hospital for goodness sake!"
Davis rocks slightly in the plush leather chair listening to the respond from the other end of the line. There is a slight knock at the already open door that draws the attention of Nathaniel. He looks over to see his son, Stephon. Davis smiles and motions him into the office with a hand gesture.
"That's the point, old friend. Everyone involved in this will be doin' it for free, out of the kindness of their heart. We currently don't have any allocated funds so we have to do all this for free."
Stephon moves into the room and has a sit in the plush chair in front of his father's desk. He removes his Atlanta Braves baseball cap and places it on his knee while politely remaining silent.
"They'll listen to you, they've always listened to you, Dark. They've been your crew since the beginnin'. If you say you guys will referee, they'll referee without question. "
Davis mouths "give me one minute" to Stephon.
"Alright then, give it some thought and get back to me ASAP one way or another. The show is a few days away and I'll need to know."
Stephon looks around the office noticing all the awards from his father's illustrious career in wrestling.
"I'll be lookin' to hear from you, Dark. Later."
Davis places the phone back into its rest before turning his attention to his eldest child with a wide smile.
Davis: So what's up, Son? I'm surprised to see you here since I've not seen you for more than three minutes at a time since you've gotten back.
Stephon: You know how it is, Pops….trainin', visitin' old friends, blah, blah. It's not like I've purposely been avoidin' you. Besides you've been super busy with getting' UGZ up and runnin'. It's a big load to carry.
The elder Davis removes his glasses and gently places them on his desk. With his eyes closed, he massages the bridge of his nose before giving his attention back to his progeny.
Davis: You don't know the half of it, Son. Neither Kellar or Williams have put much thought into the long term solutions that it will take to sustain a wrestlin' company. I've been workin' hard to secure officiatin', promotion, security, and a host of other things to simply conduct this fundraiser event on Sunday. In order for UGZ to maintain we're goin' to need major capital, plain and simple.
Stephon: Maybe you should rethink this then, Pops? Get Icons Kellar and Williams to buy you out. There's no shame in getting' out while you're still ahead.
Davis: Maybe…anyway, none of that is somethin' you should be worried about. It'll all work itself out. So you ready for Red Dragon this Sunday?
Stephon: Of course. You know I stay ready, Pops. The question needs to be asked if Red Dragon is ready for me? No disrespect for whoever booked this match but it's only goin' to be evenly balanced on paper because at this point in my career he's not even a good match up for me.
Davis gives Stephon a peculiar eye.
Stephon: Don't get me wrong, Pops, Red Dragon was good enough to be a Globalstar but so was Pitfighter, right? I've been in the ring with and defeated legends such as Icon Kellar, Bane, and Chris Cairns. What has Dragon really done in his career?
Davis: That's very cocky of you, Stephon.
Stephon: Yes sir, but it's also the truth. Red Dragon has proven time and time again that he has no heart for the sport. He'll come in for whatever payday he is offered, attempt to offer some verbal fuel in the buildup, and then completely disappear. The guy is a disgrace to everythin' the sport is about, Pops. If this wasn't for Children's Atlanta Healthcare I wouldn't have agreed to do this.
Davis: So now you're the big time superstar wrestler, Stephon? Have you forgotten the reason why we wrestle? Regardless of who we are facin', regardless of where we are wrestlin', and regardless of how many people are watchin' we do it all for the fans. Nothin' more, nothin' less.
Stephon: Not the "do it for the fans" speech, Pops. I've heard that my entire life. Like I said it's no disrespect to Red Dragon or even you, but that was YOUR way of goin' about your wrestlin' career. It's what made you, you! But I'm not you, Pops. I'm my own man.
The Icon strokes his goatee in deep thought.
Stephon: And I'm not sayin' the fans aren't a major reason we do what we do but I do have some personal interest. I do want to make a name for myself other than bein' Icon Nathaniel Davis' son. I want to win titles and awards all over the world without bein' bogged down by bein' the defender of the people. And doin' it your way just isn't goin' to get it anymore.
Davis: Obviously this is somethin' that has been on your mind for awhile now.
The son silently nods in agreement.
Davis: This explains your sister's attitude as well.
Stephon: Jazzy and I have talked about this for years. I was right there with you and Moms when you guys tried to talk her out of wrestlin' because I knew there was never goin' to be a chance for her to get out of the Davis shadow.
Stephon pops on his hat as he stands to his feet.
Stephon: I didn't mean to get into this right now, Pops. I just stopped in to see how you were doin'. I'm sorry if I overstepped but it just needed to be said. I'll be here for the match against Red Dragon but after that I'm not sure I'll be able to just "help" out UGZ.
Stephon turns on his heels and makes his way out of the office. Davis exhales not stopping him.
